Australian Aboriginal Art Gallery – JYDY WATSON NAPANGARDY. AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINAL ART PAINTING by JUDY WATSON NAPANGARDI “MINA MINA” 205 x 154 cm. OPEN A WINDOW INTO THE UNIQUE WORLD OF AUSTRALIAN INDIGENOUS ART. Australian Aboriginal Art Gallery. AAA Gallery Pty Ltd. Title: MINA MINA Artist: Judy Watson Napangardi (deceased) Painted: 2016 Medium: Acrylic on canvas, unframed Painting area: 205cm x 154cm Margin: 4.5-5.0cm Authenticity: The painting singed by Judy Watson. CoA and pictures of Judy holding and signing her work will be provided. Story: All of Judy’s artworks portray the different stories associated with the sacred area of Mina Mina. For Millenia the Warlpiri women have visited the area to perform ceremony and ritual. In this story, Judy expresses the Hair String Skirt Dreaming. The cental motif in this painting is ceremonial hair bands, depicted as arc shapes on either side of the painting. The parallel lifeworks represent the landscape on each side. Artist: Judy Watson Napangardi Skin Name: Napangardi Born: c. 1935 Region: Yarungkanji, Mt. Doreen Station Language: Warlpiri Subjects and Themes(Dreaming): Mina Mina , Karnta (Women), Kanakurlangu (Digging Stick), Ngalyipi (Snake Vine), Yunkaranyi (Honey Ant), Jintiparnta (Native Truffle) and hair belt. About artist Judy Watson Napangardi was born circa 1935 at Yarungkanji, Mt. With her family Judy made many trips on foot back to (and lived for long periods at) Mina Mina and Yingipurlangu, her ancestral country on the border of the Tanami and Gibson Deserts. These places are rich in bush tucker such as wanakiji (bush plums), yakajirri (bush tomatoes), and wardapi (sand goanna). Most of her works depict Mina Mina or Dreamings connected to it: Karnta (Women), Kanakurlangu (Digging Stick), Ngalyipi (Snake Vine), Yunkaranyi (Honey Ant), Jintiparnta (Native Truffle) and hair belt. Judy was taught painting by her elder sister, Maggie Napangardi Watson. She painted alongside her at Warlukurlangu artists for a number of years, developing her own unique style. She transmits her energy to her work through her dynamic use of colour, and energetic “dragged dotting” style. She is at the forefront of a move towards more abstract rendering of Jukurrpa by Warlpiri artists; however her work retains strong kurruwarri, the details which tell of the sacredness of place and song in her culture. 2005’Warlukurlangu Artists of Yuendumu’, Japingka Gallery, Fremantle. 2005’Karnta Jukurrpa’, Alcaston Gallery, Melbourne. 2004’Big Country’ Gallery Gondwana, Alice Springs, NT. 2004’Desert Mob’ Araluen Centre, Alice Springs. 2004’Divas of the Desert Gallery Gondwana, Alice Springs. 2004’Dreaming Stories’, Indigenart, Perth. 2004 Little Warlu, Big Stories, Hot Little paintings by Big artists of Yuendumu, Australia’s NT & Outback Centre, Sydney. 2004’New Works from Yuendumu’, Bellas Gallery, Brisbane. 2004’Painting Country’, Thorn quest Gallery, Queensland. 2004 Yilpinji – Love Magic and Ceremony, Japingka Gallery, Fremantle. 2003 Alcaston Gallery, Melbourne. 2003 Black and White. Authentic Indigenous Artwork from Central Australia which makes a unique Australian gift for family and friends overseas. This 46cm x 46cm canvas is delivered rolled up for you to choose how to display it, such as by putting it in a frame or hanging it on the wall as is. This painting is called Ngatijirri Jukurrpa (Budgerigar Dreaming) by Warlukurlangu artist Kenneth Jungarrayi Martin. Kenneth began painting with the art centre in Yuendumu in 2011 and says that he enjoys painting because it makes him feel relaxed. He paints alongside his wife and they work together to create their paintings, with Kenneth creating the base design using his father’s Dreaming and his wife adding the dot painting style. Sadly Kenneth’s parents passed away when he was young, so he was raised by other family members and his grandfather Mosquito Morris was the one to show him the designs and shapes that depict his country, allowing him to be able to paint his interpretation of his father’s Dreamtime stories today. Established in 1985 Warlukurlangu is a not-for-profit organisation that is 100% Aboriginal-owned by its artists from the remote desert communities of Yuendumu and Nyirripi in Central Australia. Warlukurlangu Artists is famous for its gloriously colourful acrylic paintings and limited edition prints. The art centre has a national and international profile and its art has been featured in hundreds of exhibitions and publications in Australia and around the world.
